How to play GlobeTap
GlobeTap is a daily geography quiz. Every day there is one new round of five questions, and it is the same round for every player in the world. Each question is a surprising fact about a country, but the fact never names the country. Your job is to find it on a 3D globe and tap it.
A round, step by step
- Read the fact. For example: "The 1985 Schengen Agreement on open borders was signed on a boat on the Moselle here."
- Find the country. Spin the globe with your finger or mouse and zoom in. At close zoom the map switches to satellite images, which helps with small countries and islands.
- Tap your guess. A marker appears where you tapped. Changed your mind? Tap again to move it.
- Submit. The game shows the right country, how far your tap was from it, and a short explanation of the fact with a link to its source.
- Repeat five times. The five facts always come from five different countries.
The example above is Luxembourg: the agreement is named after Schengen, a village on the Moselle where Luxembourg, Germany and France meet.
Scoring
Each question is worth up to 100 points, so a perfect round scores 500. A tap anywhere inside the right country gives the full 100 points. A miss still scores something if you were close: the distance is measured from your tap to the nearest border of the right country, and the points drop the further away you are.
| Distance to the border | Points |
|---|---|
| Inside the country | 100 |
| 50 km | 95 |
| 100 km | 90 |
| 250 km | 75 |
| 500 km | 52 |
| 1,000 km | 17 |
| 1,500 km or more | 0 |
Very small countries such as Malta, Luxembourg, Singapore or Barbados are hard to hit on a globe, so for them a tap within 25 km of the border also counts as a hit.
Results, streaks and sharing
After the fifth question you see your total score, your statistics (rounds played, average points, current and best streak) and a countdown to the next round. Your streak grows by one for every day you play in a row.
You can share your result without spoiling the answers. The share text shows one square per question: ๐ฉ for a hit, ๐จ for 50 points or more, ๐ฅ for less than 50.
When does a new round start?
A new round starts every day at midnight UTC, at the same moment for everyone, so friends in different time zones always play the same five facts. Once a round is over, its answers and explanations appear in the round archive.
Tips
- Look for the strongest clue first: a river, a mountain range, a capital's nickname, a neighbouring country, a year.
- If you only know the region, tap the middle of it. A near miss can still be worth 75 points or more.
- Zoom in before you tap a small country. The satellite view shows coastlines and islands much more clearly.
- Read the explanations, even for the questions you got right. The same countries come back with different facts.
